Megalomania is a psychopathological condition characterized by fantasies of power, relevance, omnipotence and by inflated self-esteem. Historically it was used as a name for narcissistic personality disorder” (see below)

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a personality disorder in which a person is excessively preoccupied with personal adequacy, power, prestige and vanity, mentally unable to see the destructive damage they are causing to themselves and others. It is a cluster B personality disorder.
It is estimated that this condition affects one percent of the population, with rates greater for men. First formulated in 1968, NPD was historically called megalomania, and is a form of severe egocentrism. – Wikipedia

According to the DSM-5, which is the standardized reference for diagnosing mental disorders:
“Symptoms of this disorder, as defined by the DSM-5, include:
A. Significant impairments in personality functioning manifested by:
- 1. Impairments in self functioning (a or b):
- a. Identity: Excessive reference to others for self-definition and self-esteem regulation; exaggerated self-appraisal may be inflated or deflated, or vacillate between extremes; emotional regulation mirrors fluctuations in self-esteem.
- b. Self-direction: Goal-setting is based on gaining approval from others; personal standards are unreasonably high in order to see oneself as exceptional, or too low based on a sense of entitlement; often unaware of own motivations.

- 2. Impairments in interpersonal functioning (a or b):
- a. Empathy: Impaired ability to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others; excessively attuned to reactions of others, but only if perceived as relevant to self; over- or underestimate of own effect on others.

Intimacy: Relationships largely superficial (say, only cohorts with young, beautiful models who are disposable after they ‘age out’ of their arm-candy function?) and exist to serve self-esteem regulation; mutuality constrained by little genuine interest in others’ experiences and predominance of a need for
- personal gain (such as, say, wealth, excessive fame, power, sex, etc.)
B. Pathological personality traits in the following domain:
- Antagonism, characterized by:
- a. Grandiosity: Feelings of entitlement, either overt or covert; self-centeredness; firmly holding to the belief that one is better than others; condescending toward others.
- b. Attention seeking: Excessive attempts to attract and be the focus of the attention of others; admiration seeking (like say, get a Network Prime Time TV Show, for instance?)
C. The impairments in personality functioning and the individual’s personality trait expression are relatively stable across time and consistent across situations.
DSM-IV-TR
Symptoms of this disorder, as defined by the DSM-IV-TR, include:[1]
- Has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements).
- Is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love.
- Believes that he or she is “special” and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions).
- Requires excessive admiration.
- Has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations.
- Is inter-personally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends.
- Lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others.
- Is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her.
- Shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes
- “Narcissistic personality disorder is characterized by an over-inflated sense of self-importance, as well as dramatic, emotional behavior that is in the same category as antisocial and borderline personality disorders.”
In addition to these symptoms, the person may display arrogance, show superiority, and seek power. The symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder can be similar to the traits of individuals with strong self-esteem and confidence; differentiation occurs when the underlying psychological structures of these traits are considered pathological. Narcissists have such an elevated sense of self-worth that they value themselves as inherently better than others, when in reality they have a fragile self-esteem, cannot handle criticism, and often try to compensate for this inner fragility by belittling or disparaging others in an attempt to validate their own self-worth. Comments and criticisms about others are vicious from sufferers of NPD, in an attempt to boost their own poor self-esteem.
An extensive US survey found a high association with other disabilities, especially amongst men: mental disability, substance use, mood, anxiety disorders and other personality disorders, bipolar I disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and schizotypal and borderline personality disorders were among the associated disabilities
Treatment
People rarely seek therapy for NPD. This is partly because NPD sufferers deny they have a problem. Most cannot see the destructive damage they cause to themselves and to others and usually only seek treatment at the insistence of relatives and friends.
Or perhaps the United States Government?
Allowing a candidate with a mental disorder to achieve that final bid for the oval office without a complete physical and mental exam to demonstrate the required good health (both mental and physical) to be able to carry out the demanding duties of Commander in Chief is like handing the controls of this country over to a constipated baby with an assault rifle. A loaded assault rifle. And we’ve already seen what happens when nut jobs get hold of the big guns and go on a rampage.
Look at me – I am so mighty and so manly and so powerful, I ride a bear to work.
This man admires Vladimir Putin, another narcissistic megalomaniac who is a known murderer, who has stolen billions of his fellow countrymens money for his own private gain, and who, like Adolf Hitler, once in office, disbanded with elections and announced he was going to remain in the top office of power in the land for 12 or maybe 20 more years. Depends on how he feels when that deadline approaches.
Trump also stated before the public, when referring to Putin’s killing of journalists, that maybe he would like to kill them also ((shrug)).
It has also been speculated a high percentage of CEO’s and business mega-womps are sociopaths, a condition often closely related to pathological narcissism. Just watch a few episodes of Criminal Minds and you’ll see this condition of ‘narcissistic sociopath’ presented and described time and time again, in the role of serial killers who lack empathy for others. How can you possibly lead a nation of human beings when you lack empathy for humanity? It is one thing to hire people who obey you to work for your company under your control and when you say “You’re fired” they just magically disappear. But Americans won’t disappear. We are a mixed bag, none of us were hired to be here, and you can’t fire us.
How is it that Trump supporters don’t see his dangerous mental disorder? What is wrong with them? Is there a reflexive form of Megalomania, in that the narcissists survival relies on the equal but opposite condition in others to feed their narcissistic egos? Absolutely! Casually speaking, we call them star-struck fans. Or ass kissers. Sycophants. Delusional.
But psychologists refer to these types as ‘supply’ for the narcissistic sociopath. Weak in their own mental constitution and frail power base, they can only rely on their praise of the big monkey in charge to hopefully get themselves what they want but which they are unable to attain by their own means. They are dependents, mental children, who must supply the egomaniac with his ego-food in hopes they will be taken care of by the master. It is basic Gorilla style pack-functioning. I used to hold Republicans more accountable than that, and more capable. Not anymore.
This macabre sideshow the Republican Party calls a Primary Campaign must come to it’s inevitable end, or we are all doomed.
And I haven’t even mentioned his sexism, ageism or racism yet. Because, after all, Donald Trump says he doesn’t have those things.
